What specialization to choose in MBA?

“Should I choose college A’s HR Course, college B’s PGDM Course, or General MBA?”

Such questions are normal
Though it is not the time to think about specialization, some colleges demand a little forward-thinking. Before you step foot in college, you are already choosing what you want to potentially become.

Let me try to help you make the right choice

In my opinion, the best way to know what you want to do is to definitely eliminate what you don’t want to do.

FINANCE
Finance is Quants heavy, and one needs to be good at Excel and statistics. Finance and accounts are two different things, and if you think that by learning accounts you can do finance, then that isn’t right. If you are weak in math, then finance can be difficult for you. Apart from that, someone working in a finance job as a professional must be good at keeping in check with the day-to-day affairs of the world and must be smart. Finance is a highly-paid specialization, but real hard work is needed.

MARKETING
Marketing involves two things: research and selling. Business school will mainly teach you research, but selling is a skill you have on your own. A marketer, essentially a salesperson, needs to have a keen eye for details. Marketing is a relentless profession, and creativity is your biggest armory. Besides that, you must be a great communicator and be very flexible.

HUMAN RESOURCE
Human resources is an internal function of an organization. It requires you to ensure that the internal structure of an organization is healthy and thus ready to meet its objectives. Consider them like White Blood Cells/Immune system for the organization. HR involves three broad main subjects: Organizational Behavior, Law and Industrial Relations and Performance Management. HR must be good at handling People, Processes, Power and Position. HR needs to directly interact with all layers of an organization, from the CEO to the worker.

OPERATIONS
Operations/Ops requires you to deal with the day-to-day external and internal operations of an organization and ensure that the process of the organization does not break down. Their ultimate goal is to improve the process for maximum efficiency. Operations are again Quants heavy, and besides that, they are very rigid and do not allow flexibility. Operations is best suited for those who have a fixed way of doing things.

ANALYTICS
Analytics fundamentally analyzes data and provides data output to professionals after crunching and synthesizing it. Analytics is the most Quant heavy, pure office job, and the fastest-growing profession. In this field, the focus is on deriving insights from real business and consumer data. The goal is to draw insights about why things happen, what will happen, and what should be done. Business analytics utilizes big data, statistical analysis, and data visualization to make better decisions and implement organizational changes.
